The Card Players (1894-1895)
by Paul Cezanne

This is a painting that is surely known the world over and Cezanne actually painted a whole series of them with minor variations. Two men, looking much like rough farmhands, are relaxing after a day's work, playing cards and sharing a bottle of wine.

This was the first painting I chose to weave a story around, about these two good friends who meet to play cards and drink wine after a week at work. But this very evening, Pierre has a secret to tell his friend and events take a rather sour turn.
